History
Palm Beach was named after the Cabbage Tree palms that were abundant in the area in the 1800's. James Napper was granted about 400 acres in 1816 and this included most of Whale Beach as well as Barrenjoey ( Aboriginal for young kangaroo ). Snapperman Beach was used by a Chinese firm, in the 1860's, as a fish drying business. Certain maps refer to it as Chinamans Beach up to 1885. In the year 1900 Palm Beach was divided into 18 large blocks and put up for sale and NONE sold ( where is a time machine when you need it? ). Livistona australis is the Latin name for Cabbage Tree Palms.
